Lufthansa's final scheduled A340-600 passenger flights are set for Sunday 18 October 2026, according to Simple Flying, writing on 1 October, and Air Data News, writing on 6 October. Both name the routes from Frankfurt to Washington Dulles and to New York JFK. I have not found a Lufthansa statement that names the date, so this is the reporting, not an announcement I can quote.

The date, and the one it replaced

Air Data News reports that the last flight is LH419 from Washington Dulles to Frankfurt, leaving on 18 October and arriving on the morning of 19 October. It adds that Lufthansa had earlier planned A340-600 flights through 24 October and then shortened the remaining schedule.

Older reports say 25 October. Simple Flying wrote on 1 February 2026 that Cirium schedule data showed 25 October as the final date, with one Riyadh to Frankfurt service. A Contrail article dated 23 September still said the same. The newer Simple Flying and Air Data News pieces do not mention 25 October at all, so I am going with 18 October and calling it scheduled. Airlines move aircraft at short notice. Check a live tracker before you plan around it.

The routes

Simple Flying lists LH400 and LH401 for Frankfurt and New York JFK, and LH416 to LH419 for Dulles. Deep Arrival, on 9 October, reports that from 19 October the A340-300 takes over the New York and Washington flights, with no First Class cabin, citing Aviation Wire for the booking-system timing. Deep Arrival says the A340-600 seats 297 in four cabins and the A340-300 283 in three.

Where the type came from

Air Data News says Lufthansa received 24 A340-600s from 2003, almost a quarter of the 97 that Airbus delivered. It says the A340-600 was the world's longest passenger aircraft, at 75.3 metres, until the Boeing 747-8 arrived.

Simple Flying's May report says Lufthansa has flown the type to nearly 60 destinations, and that Seoul Incheon is the most visited with 6,606 lifetime flights. The source of that data is not named in the article, so I would treat the figures as indicative.

Why it stayed so long

Simple Flying says Lufthansa originally planned to retire the type by October 2025. Air Data News says the fleet was grounded during the Covid-19 pandemic, then ten jets returned to service. It blames delays to new widebodies, namely the Boeing 787-9, 777-9 and the Airbus A350, for extending the type's career through the 2026 summer season.

Lufthansa Group announced the withdrawal in April, as part of capacity and cost measures, per Air Data News. Four A340-600s remained in service when Air Data News and Simple Flying wrote. Other operators still fly the type, among them Mahan Air, Conviasa and Universal Sky Carrier.

What to do if you want to see one

If you want to see one, the most useful thing is to watch a live tracker for the Dulles and JFK flight numbers rather than rely on any single date. I cannot promise any particular aircraft will be on any particular flight, and neither can the reports.

I have no radar footage of an A340-600 to show you, so this story is told in photographs. The images are from Wikimedia Commons, and the photographers are credited with the story.

Did you ever fly the A340-600, and on which route?
