KLM's first Airbus A350-900, PH-ZNA, has stopped being a delivery photograph and become a timetable entry. Aviation reports say it operated its first passenger flight on 30 October 2026, as KL691 from Amsterdam Schiphol to Toronto Pearson. KLM calls the aircraft De Nachtwacht, Dutch for The Night Watch, after Rembrandt's painting.
The first flight
The jet was delivered on 2 October 2026, flying from Toulouse to Schiphol that afternoon. Migflug and Insider Flyer both report that date. The passenger debut came four weeks later. RusTourismNews gives KL691 a scheduled departure of 13:30 local time and an arrival in Toronto at 16:40; that is a single source for the times, so treat them as the schedule, not a log. Aviation A2Z says the flight also carried eight tonnes of cargo.
Earlier reports gave other launch dates, including 9 October and 23 October. The reports published around the flight itself agree on 30 October, and that is the date I have used.
How often, and where next
Migflug and Gate Checked both say Toronto starts with five flights a week, flown as KL691 and KL692, and becomes daily from March 2027. Aviation A2Z puts the first daily day at 3 March 2027; the others give only the month. Gate Checked adds six a week in January 2027.
Montreal follows on 30 November 2026, according to Migflug, RusTourismNews and Aviation A2Z. Migflug says East Africa comes after that, with Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Nairobi planned for December and January. Gate Checked lists these as a few flights a week each, not the whole route. Schedules like these move, so check KLM before you plan a trip around one.
What it replaces
The sources do not quite agree. Migflug says the A350 replaces A330s and Boeing 777-200ERs. Gate Checked's schedule reading is narrower: on Toronto, an A350 takes the place of an A330-200, on Montreal it swaps for a temporary A330-300, and on the Tanzania and Kenya routes it replaces 787-10s. I would say it is renewing KLM's older long-haul fleet and leave the exact swaps to the timetable.
The seats, and one catch
PH-ZNA has 331 seats: 34 World Business Class, 26 Premium Comfort and 271 economy. KLM has 22 A350-900s on order, per Migflug and Gate Checked. RusTourismNews and Insider Flyer both report that the new business class seats were not on sale when the aircraft entered service, because they were still awaiting certification. I covered that in the delivery article. I have not seen a confirmed date for when they will be sold.
The names
The second aircraft, PH-ZNB, is due to be called Het Meisje met de Parel, after Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, and Migflug says KLM is naming its A350s after Dutch art. The painting that gave the first one its name is Rembrandt's The Night Watch, from 1642, which hangs in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
What it looks like on a radar
I have not caught a KLM A350 on my desk radar yet. The A350-900 on my screen in the photographs and Reel is a Finnair one, OH-LWN, flying London to Helsinki at 10,875 feet on 27 September 2026. It reads the same type label as KLM's will, Airbus A350-900. The photograph of PH-ZNA shows the delivery flight on 2 October, not a passenger service.
If PH-ZNA crosses your sky, I would like to hear about it. Would you book a flight just to try a new aircraft type?
