There is a particular kind of aviation object that only makes sense as a stepping stone. It exists to answer one question, it answers it, and then it is quietly put away. Gloster Meteor EE227 is one of those.
On 20 September 1945, EE227 took off from RAF Church Broughton in Derbyshire with Gloster's chief test pilot Eric Greenwood at the controls. It had propellers on the front. This was odd, because the Meteor was Britain's first operational jet fighter and the whole point of it was that it did not need propellers.
What was actually bolted to it
The engines were Rolls-Royce RB.50 Trents, and they were a conversion rather than a clean-sheet design. Rolls-Royce took a Derwent II turbojet, cropped the impeller, left the turbine alone, and added a reduction gearbox — designed by A. A. Rubbra — driving a five-bladed Rotol propeller. The jet still produced thrust out of the back. Most of its energy now went out through the propeller shaft instead.
That combination is a turboprop, and on that September morning nobody had ever flown one.
The practical problems were immediate and slightly comic. A Meteor's engines sit on the wings, close to the ground, which is fine when nothing is spinning in front of them. Fit propellers and the blade tips suddenly want to occupy the same space as the runway. The fix was to lengthen the undercarriage — a modification made not for any aerodynamic reason but simply so the thing could sit on the ground without damaging itself.
The engine had already run 633 hours on the test bench before it was ever installed. Once flying, the programme ran to 298 hours in the air.
The name outlived the aeroplane
EE227 was never going to enter service, and it did not. What survived was the name.
Rolls-Royce has a long habit of naming its engines after British rivers — Derwent, Welland, Avon, Conway. The Trent is a Midlands river, and the RB.50 was the first engine to carry it. The name was used again on the RB.203 Trent in the 1960s, another design that did not reach production, and then revived a third time for the turbofan family that Rolls-Royce builds today.
That third use is the one most people have flown behind without noticing. The Trent 700 hangs off A330s, the Trent 7000 off the A330neo, the Trent 900 off A380s, the Trent 1000 off 787s, and the Trent XWB off A350s.
One of those is absolute. The A350 has never been offered with anything else — Trent XWB is the only engine the aircraft has ever had. So while "every widebody overhead is a Trent" would be nonsense, since the A330 and 787 were both sold with General Electric and Pratt & Whitney options, "every A350 overhead is a Trent" is simply true.
Why it is worth knowing
Most aircraft facts are about the airframe. This one is about a name, and names are how engineering history actually gets transmitted — not through museums, but through a badge on a nacelle that nobody thinks to ask about.
When an A350 crosses the window, the type and the altitude are the obvious things. The engine name is the quiet one, and it has been in continuous use, on and off, since a modified fighter with propellers on it lifted off a Derbyshire runway in the last month of the Second World War.
